4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practice sessions, autonomous work, study and assessment tasks.

Students are expected to participate actively in class throughout the semester.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

4.2. Learning tasks

The course includes the following learning tasks: 

  • Lectures.
  • Practice sessions.
  • Autonomous work and study.
  • Assessment tasks.

4.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics: 

  • Topic 1.
    • 1.1. Introduction about the situation of the Arabic language in the world: the Diglossia.
    • 1.2. Introduction to phonology and phonetics of the Arabic language: consonants and vowels.
    • 1.3.  Presentation of the Arabic alphabet.
  • Topic 2.
    • 2.1. Oral skills: greetings and presentations.
    • 2.2. Grammar: independent personal pronouns. Structure of the noun phrase. Interrogative and vocative.
    • 2.3.  Vocabulary: useful expressions for everyday use.
  • Topic 3.
    • 3.1. Oral skills: Nationalities and jobs. Asking and giving personal information.
    • 3.2. Grammar: nominal Morphology. Qualifying phrase.
    • 3.3. Vocabulary: Country names, nisba adjectives and jobs. 
  • Topic 4.
    • 4.1. Oral skills: family
    • 4.2. Grammar: genitive construction. Demonstrative. Bound pronouns.
    • 4.3. Vocabulary: members of the family. 
  • Topic 5.
    • 5.1. Oral skills: usual places.
    • 5.2. Grammar: prepositions. Adverbs. Negative noun phrase.
    • 5.3. Vocabulary: place names. Numerals 1-10.
    • 5.4. Written skills: writing exercises.
  • Topic 6.
    • 6.1. Oral skills: actions.
    • 6.2. Grammar: regular verb conjugation: perfective.
    • 6.3.  Vocabulary: verbs.
    • 6.4. Written skills: writing exercises.
